Earlier this month, Redwood announced that architecture practice Jestico + Whiles, has been appointed to design the luxury hotel for Edinburgh St James, the £850m redevelopment project TIAA Henderson Real Estate (TH Real Estate) is delivering in the Scottish capital.
London-based Jestico + Whiles was appointed following a competition that saw five international architecture firms present their visions for the hotel. The team has designed the hotel as a bundle of ‘coiled ribbons’, creating a free-flowing and bold building which will complement the development’s masterplan and boast 360 degree panoramic views over the UNESCO world heritage city. The final design and layout of the hotel is flexible and will be shaped by the eventual operator.
Edinburgh St James will deliver 750,000 sq ft of prime retail space including a multi-screen cinema and more than 30 dining destinations, helping shift the Scottish capital further up the UK retail rankings, from 13th to seventh place. The redevelopment at Edinburgh St James is a major boost for the city’s tourist industry, which contributes an estimated £260m to Edinburgh’s economy each year.
The announcement secured press coverage across the Scottish national media including STV News at 6 and The Times, as well as the architecture and property press.
